Shrew'd: The Smart & Sassy Survey of American Women Artists
Date(s): February 12, 2010 thru May 9, 2010
Shrew'd: The Smart & Sassy Survey of American Women Artists, Sheldon’s biennial invitational exhibition will concentrate on the work of a diverse group of American women artists who use aesthetic media to question social norms of representation in art, popular culture and everyday life. “Shrew’d” is a double-edged coinage, incorporating both shrewd and shrew—terms related etymologically. The subtitle is intended to expand on the double play (or mixed message) of shrew’d, and thereby name contradictory perceptions regarding women who are smart and outspoken or defiant—perceived, that is, as nagging, impudent or sassy. This Survey takes a critical feminist perspective on society's mixed messages about assertive women, which describes what some contemporary women artists have had to become. Artists being considered for exhibition and collection acquisition include Renee Cox, Kim Dingle, Alma Lopez, Catherine Opie, Deborah Kass, Martha Rosler, Carrie Mae Weems, Mickalena Thomas, Delilah Montoya and Philamona Williamson.
