Subject(s) to Change: American Art from the Permanent Collection

This year Sheldon is presenting artworks from its permanent collection categorized by subject matter. Five galleries offer visitors Still Life, Portraiture, Landscape, Narrative and Figurative artworks; a sixth gallery offers recent acquisitions of contemporary art.
Organizing the galleries in this way provides opportunities to consider the diverse stylistic approaches to similar subjects. Works in the Landscape gallery, for example, reflect the evolution of landscape painting from the 19th century to the present. The Still Life gallery presents representational examples such as Severin Roesen’s Still Life with Fruit and Champagne Glass but also includes the dynamic work of the Modernists such as Marsden Hartley’s Still Life with Fan.
Works in the Figurative and Portrait galleries highlight the traditional life-drawing approaches, but after the World War II era, also move toward abstraction. Just back from its national tour, Edward Hopper’s Room in New York will be an anchor piece in the Narrative gallery. It will be surrounded by works similar in descriptive content but unique in their approach.
The final gallery reflects the diverse themes and personal nature of contemporary art and allows the museum to proudly present recent acquisitions. We invite visitors to our permanent collection galleries to enjoy both the stimulation and variety of great American art.
