TRANSactions: Contemporary Latin American and Latino Art

Date(s):  November 1, 2008 thru January 18, 2009

Art created by contemporary Latin American and Latino artists moves across and beyond geographical, cultural, political and aesthetic borders. Featuring work by 48 artists, TRANSactions: Contemporary Latin American and Latino Art highlights how these artists, despite their differences, have commonly explored the question of identity through their own cultures and life experiences.

Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (MCASD), the exhibition celebrates the heterogeneous nature of contemporary Latin American and Latino art.

The exhibition finds connections between Latino artists working within the United States and those from Latin America. A new interpretation evolves that celebrates the diverse nature of contemporary art and deconstructs the obsolete preconceptions of what is Latin American and Latino art.

The MCASD describes the artworks in TRANSactions as those that “tell stories of cultural hybrids, political collisions, and universal consequences.” Notable artists in the exhibition include Ana Mendieta, Vik Muniz, John Valadez, Perry Vasquez, Victor Payan and Gustavo Artigas. Media includes traditional art methods such as painting, photography, clay and glass as well as cutting edge techniques involving installations, video, fabric, silk, beeswax and plastic.

Two artists whose works are included in the exhibition will offer lectures at Sheldon. They are: Enrique Chagoya on November 6 and Liliana Porter on November 18.

In conjunction with the exhibition the Sheldon will present its second annual Dia des los Muertos celebration on October 31 and November 1.

Major sponsors for TRANSactions are the Hixson-Lied Endowment, Kathryn and Marc LeBaron, and the Duncan Family Trust.

Location: Sheldon
