Billboards, neon signs, magazines, television, websites, and cell phones are all ways we experience the interplay of text and images. The detritus of visual culture, a constant mixing of text and image, reflects how we communicate with one another. Our daily experiences are interwoven with the words and visual materials that stimulate us.

Messaging: Text and Visual Art explores the function of "messaging" in art, specifically how artists working in various medias, styles, and movements have employed text in their work.

Approximately twenty-five works of art from the permanent collection of the Sheldon Museum of Art make up the exhibition. Composed of prints, photographs, and multi-media, the exhibition includes works by artists Marcel Duchamp, Barbara Kruger, Walter Robinson, and Carrie Mae Weems.
