Larry Burrows, Ammunition Airlift into Besieged Khesanh, 1968

Visionary Photography

Date(s):  September 15, 2009 thru January 3, 2010

A small exhibition in the Print Study Gallery, Visionary Photography consists of 11 artworks from the Sheldon Museum of Art’s permanent collection. The exhibition was organized in collaboration with the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

The exhibition highlights photography that spans more than 80 years and documents three universal themes — war, poverty and the right to assemble. Included are Works Progress Adminstration (WPA) artist Dorothea Lange’s famous Depression-era photographs. Kenneth Jarecke’s Gulf War scenes are paired with Vietnam War photography by Larry Burrows. Views of demonstrations, protests and police confrontations present the energy and emotion generated when humans gather to express their opinions, needs and basic rights.
