Fourth Annual Day of the Dead Celebration
Date(s): Sunday, October 31, 2010
Time(s): 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM
The popularity of Sheldon's Dia De Los Muertos celebration can't be denied, and as the festival enters its fourth year, new activities abound. Beginning October 26, colorful decorations and a traditional ofrenda will decorate the museum. Sheldon invites the community to bring their own commemorative items to honor a deceased loved one to place on the altar, which will be on display until November 14.
Calaveras Contest
New this year is a literary calaveras contest. Calaveras (which also means "skulls" in Spanish) are festive, satirical obituaries in the form of poems that creatively make fun of what is around us in our daily lives. Students and adults of all ages are invited to submit their own (Spanish Calaveras) poems for the chance to win a prize and to celebrate Dia De Los Muertos.
Categories include students in grades 9-12, college students of all ages and adults 18 and over. First place in each category will receive a $100 prize.
Each first place entry will be displayed in the Sheldon Great Hall and on the Sheldon web site from October 26 to November 14, 2010.
The deadline for entry is October 3, 2010. For the complete contest rules and submissions guidelines, click here, call 402-770-2075 or email sheldoncalaverascontest@gmail.com.
