Jazz Film Series

Saxophonist Dexter Gordon is the only jazz musician to be nominated for an Oscar for best leading actor in the 1987 film Round Midnight, directed by Bertrand Tavernier.

Maxine Gordon, his widow and a jazz scholar, will give a talk on the making of the film and will lead a discussion following the screening. She is a Ph.D. candidate at New York University and is Senior Interviewer and Jazz Researcher for the Bronx African American History Project at Fordham University. She is writing a meditative biography of Dexter Gordon.

Sheldon's Jazz Film series begins this semester with an event featuring shorts showing Mary Lou Williams and Pearl Primus on Monday, March 8.

The series is funded in part by a grant from the Nebraska Humanities Council.
