Kirsten Pai Buick, PhD, professor of art history at the University of New Mexico, presents "Slavery Makes the Woman: Historical and Racial Linkages in the Creative Practices of Mary Edmonia Lewis and Kara Walker."

Kirsten Pai Buick, PhD, is a professor of art history at the University of New Mexico where she has worked since 2001. She is the author of Child of the Fire: Mary Edmonia Lewis and the Problem of Art History’s Black and Indian Subject (Duke, 2010) as well as numerous articles on African American art. Her research and teaching interests include the visual and material culture of the first British Empire; American landscapes; US art from the colonial period to World War II; African American art; and women as patrons and collectors of art. In 2015, she was the recipient of the David C. Driskell Prize for her contributions to the field of African American art and art history. Her forthcoming book, In Authenticity: Kara Walker and the Eidetics of Racism, is in progress.
